L'Università Stendhal è stata fondata nel 1970 sulla base di una legge promossa dall'allora Ministro dell'Istruzione Edgar Faure come università statale e il campus è stato costruito a Saint-Martin-d'Hères nel dipartimento dell'Isère. Le istituzioni precedenti possono essere fatte risalire al 1339.
Le principali aree di formazione sono le lingue straniere, la letteratura antica e moderna, le scienze del linguaggio e il giornalismo. L'accento è posto sulla formazione degli insegnanti. Recentemente, gli studenti vengono anche preparati per una carriera nel settore culturale o della comunicazione o nel giornalismo. Ogni anno più di 1000 studenti vengono preparati, attraverso vari programmi di scambio, dal CUEF per soddisfare le esigenze specifiche di uno studio in Francia.
