De universiteit Stendhal werd in 1970 opgericht als staatsuniversiteit op basis van een wet die destijds door minister van Onderwijs Edgar Faure werd voorgesteld, en de campus werd opgericht in Saint-Martin-d'Hères in het departement Isère. Voorgangerinstellingen zijn terug te voeren tot het jaar 1339.
De belangrijkste opleidingsgebieden zijn vreemde talen, oude en nieuwe literatuur, taalkunde en journalistiek. De nadruk ligt hierbij op de lerarenopleiding. Recent worden studenten ook opgeleid voor een loopbaan in de culturele of communicatiesector of in de journalistiek. Elk jaar worden meer dan 1000 studenten via verschillende uitwisseling programma's door het CUEF voorbereid op de specifiek Franse eisen van een studie.
