Il Charolais è un antico contea in Francia nell'attuale dipartimento della Saona e Loira nella regione Borgogna-Franca Contea. La capitale era la città di Charolles. Il Charolais fu acquistato da Filippo il Temerario, duca di Borgogna, nel 1390. Egli lo concesse in apanage a suo nipote Filippo il Buono, che quindi divenne il primo conte di Charolais all'interno della casa di Valois-Borgogna. A sua volta, questi lo cedette a suo figlio Carlo.
