Bergues è una piccola città fortificata: le mura, lunghe più di 5 km, risalgono in parte al Medioevo o sono state costruite secondo i progetti di Vauban.
Quasi tutte le fortificazioni di Bergues sono state conservate. È anche fortunato perché testimonia molti diversi periodi di costruzione . La cortina muraria settentrionale e la torre Guy de Dampierre (1286) risalgono all'epoca dei conti delle Fiandre. I duchi di Borgogna ci hanno lasciato principalmente il Nekerstor, la Porte de Bierne e la cortina muraria lungo la Rue Pierre DECROO (1418). Durante il periodo spagnolo, emerse un nuovo tipo di fortificazioni bastionate e scavate. Questo era il fronte occidentale tra la porta Cassel e la porta Bierne (1585).
Nel 2014 è stato inaugurato il sentiero "sentier de la couronne Saint-winoc" , un percorso che costeggia in parte i bastioni.
