Non c'erano anestetici fino a quando il dottor John Snow somministrò etere (cioè cloroformio) a Vittoria durante i parti del principe Leopoldo e della principessa Beatrice. Leopoldo nacque il 7 aprile 1853 al Palazzo di Buckingham, Londra. Durante il travaglio, la regina Vittoria scelse di usare cloroformio e così autorizzò l'uso dell'anestesia durante il parto, recentemente sviluppata dal professor James Young Simpson. La regina Vittoria stessa lo chiamò "quel benedetto cloroformio" e il suo effetto "calmante, tranquillizzante e delizioso oltre misura". Alcuni leader religiosi e medici si opposero al suo uso, sostenendo che Dio avesse inteso il parto come un momento difficile: (Genesi 3:16) "Renderò molto severi i tuoi dolori nel partorire."
