Con una popolazione stimata di 463 400 nella città, e con una grande zona urbana circostante di 902 877 abitanti nell'autorità combinata dell’Ovest dell'Inghilterra, è la sesta città più popolosa dell'Inghilterra e l'ottava più popolosa del Regno Unito, e quella più popolosa della regione del sud-ovest.
È situata sul fiume Avon che segna tradizionalmente la frontiera tra le contee del Gloucestershire e del Somerset.
