Il 1° ottobre 856, Giuditta di Fiandra, figlia di Carlo il Calvo, fu unta come prima donna della storia inglese a diventare regina.
Dopo il matrimonio con il re Æthelwulf, Giuditta lo accompagnò al suo centro di potere nel Wessex, il regno anglosassone che grosso modo comprendeva il sud dell'Inghilterra. Qui assunse il ruolo di regina unta al suo fianco, un fatto eccezionale nella tradizione west-sassone, dove le regine normalmente non ricevevano uno status simile. Winchester divenne in questo periodo la principale città reale del Wessex e fungeva di fatto da capitale e centro di corte. È quindi molto probabile che Giuditta trascorse una parte significativa dei suoi anni in Inghilterra a Winchester o nei suoi dintorni, oltre a brevi soggiorni in altre residenze reali nel Wessex.
