On October 1, 856, Judith of Flanders, the daughter of Charles the Bald, was anointed as the first woman in English history to become queen.
After her marriage to King Æthelwulf, Judith traveled with him to his power base in Wessex, the Anglo-Saxon kingdom that roughly encompassed southern England. There, she served as an anointed queen beside him, which was exceptional in the West Saxon tradition, where queens typically did not receive a comparable status. During this period, Winchester became the most important royal city of Wessex and effectively functioned as the capital and court center. It is therefore very likely that Judith spent a significant part of her English years in or around Winchester, along with shorter stays in other royal residences in Wessex.
