La battaglia di Stamford Bridge, dal nome di un villaggio dell'Inghilterra orientale, è spesso considerata come l'atto conclusivo dell'epoca vichinga in Inghilterra. Essa avvenne il 25 settembre 1066, pochi giorni dopo che un esercito invasore norvegese, guidato dal re Harald Hardråde, sconfisse un esercito costituito dalle truppe del conte Edwin di Mercia e di Morcar conte del Northumbria nella battaglia di Fulford, due miglia a sud della città di York.
Re Aroldo II Godwinsson d'Inghilterra si scontrò con l'esercito di Harald prendendolo di sorpresa, disarmato e impreparato, dopo una marcia leggendaria, a tappe forzate, dalla parte meridionale del regno.
