Il santuario di Artemide Orthia, era già dedicato alla dea Artemide in epoca greca arcaica, e rimase il fulcro di questo culto, diventando uno dei siti religiosi più importanti della città-stato di Sparta nell'antica Grecia.
A partire da almeno il 700 a.C., il luogo era frequentato da molte donne: un numero enormemente grande di votivi è stato trovato: più di 100.000 figurine di piombo, per lo più di ragazze danzanti o a cavallo, sono state scavate qui. Alcune di esse rappresentano Elena, si presume.
