Durante l'era classica, Ermioni era ben nota per i suoi costruttori navali e anche per la produzione di porfiria o porpora di Tiro, un colorante rosso molto importante. È una secrezione prodotta da diverse specie di lumache di mare della famiglia Muricidae, lumache di roccia originariamente conosciute con il nome di 'Murex'. Nei tempi antichi, l'estrazione di questo colorante richiedeva decine di migliaia di lumache e un lavoro sostanziale, e di conseguenza, il colorante era molto prezioso. Questo colorante veniva utilizzato per colorare le uniformi di molti eserciti, compreso quello di Alessandro Magno.
