Il nome moderno di Porto Heli si traduce in 'Baia delle Anguille'. Una teoria ovvia afferma che le anguille erano il pilastro dell'industria ittica molti anni fa. Ma altre teorie affermano che il nome Heli deriva da una graduale corruzione linguistica del nome "Alies" o "Halieis", la città antica che si trova sul lato sud-orientale del porto. La città di Halieis è ora metà sommersa nel mare.
