Il compositore Jacques Revaux è stato il primo a proporre la musica, che gli ricordava molto la Scozia. L'idea di Sardou e Delanoë era di scrivere un testo con riferimenti scozzesi, ma quando scoprirono di non sapere affatto nulla sulla Scozia, l'attenzione si spostò sull'Irlanda.
