Sorge in collina e dista circa 30 chilometri a sud dal capoluogo metropolitano. È posto alle pendici del colle Sant'Elena nei monti Peloritani a 450 m s.l.m.
Le uniche notizie sulla storia antica e medioevale di Alì sono riportate dal frate cappuccino aliota fra' Serafino d'Alì , il quale nel 1754 stilò un prezioso manoscritto dal titolo: Della Storia di Alì e suo territorio, ovvero sua fondazione ed origini e quanto in essa si racchiude e si contiene ricco di notizie sulle origini del paese.
