La leggenda vuole che Centola sia stata fondata intorno al XVI secolo da una cosiddetta “centuria” di profughi provenienti dall'antica città di Molpa: da questa “centuria” sarebbe poi derivato il nome al paese. Tuttavia Carla Marcato, ricercatrice dell'Università di Udine, ritiene molto più probabile una discendenza del toponimo da un'unità di misura agraria. Del resto il paese risulta più antico di quanto vorrebbe la leggenda.
