Alla Guerra decennale tra Como e Milano si fa risalire l'ipotesi più accreditata sulle origini del toponimo «Lipomo». All'interno del poema del cosiddetto «Anonimo Cumano», che canta appunto la guerra decennale, il testo fa riferimento a «Lepomum» e «Leppomum», anche se probabilmente si tratta di un errore di scrittura nel riportare l’originale «Leponium». Quest’ultimo sembrerebbe derivare da «Laeponius», ossia il nome di un comandante della postazione militare negli avamposti di Como a cui sarebbe stata assegnata una villa o un fondo nella zona dell’attuale Comune di Lipomo.
