Sorge sulle sponde del fiume Natisone, tra i primi contrafforti dei monti Matajur e Kraguojnca, a 28,7 chilometri dal capoluogo di provincia. La sua collocazione, tra i primi rilievi fittamente boscosi delle Prealpi Giulie, conferisce al comune una caratteristica di grande pregio paesaggistico.
Il comune ha una superficie di 48,03 km² ed una altitudine che varia dai 157 m s.l.m. del fondovalle ai 1641 metri del monte Matajur.
