Secondo la tradizione locale, sostenuta anche da alcuni storici, il borgo diede i natali al celebre navigatore Cristoforo Colombo.
Cogoleto si trova lungo la costa della riviera di ponente, ad ovest di Genova, le frazioni di Lerca e Sciarborasca e la località di Pratozanino sono situate all'interno verso le montagne per un totale di 20,72 km².
