Il territorio comunale si estende per quasi 63 km² nell'area del Monte Amiata, sviluppandosi tra quote collinari e montuose. Confina a nord con il comune di Castel del Piano, a est con i comuni di Abbadia San Salvatore e Piancastagnaio in provincia di Siena, a sud-est con il comune di Castell'Azzara, a sud con il comune di Semproniano, a sud-ovest con il comune di Roccalbegna e a nord-ovest con il comune di Arcidosso.
