Il territorio del comune è interamente compreso nel Canal del Ferro al confine a est con la Val Canale, in una zona di confine tra Alpi Carniche e Alpi Giulie con il confine tra l'Austria e l'Italia a nord. È collegato:
L'abitato principale è attraversato dal torrente Pontebbana, che fino al 1919 segnava il confine italo-austriaco, dividendo il paese in due comuni: Pontebba e Pontafel . Tale antico confine, risalente all'epoca veneziana, ha costituito per secoli una barriera non solo politica, ma anche culturale tra la Val Canale e le altre valli friulane. Il torrente confluisce poi nel fiume Fella che costeggia il paese scendendo dalla Val Canale.
