La città è universalmente conosciuta per il suo ingente patrimonio storico, artistico, paesaggistico e per la sua sostanziale unità stilistica dell'arredo urbano medievale, nonché per il celebre Palio. Nel 1995 il suo centro storico è stato inserito dall'UNESCO nel Patrimonio dell'umanità. Nella città ha sede la Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, fondata nel 1472 e dunque la più antica banca in attività nonché la più longeva al mondo.
