Il territorio del comune si trova in Carnia orientale, in una valle denominata Valle d'Incarojo o Val Chiarsò o Valle di Paularo, compresa tra i 400 e i 2.199 metri s.l.m., con il capoluogo ubicato a 690 metri s.l.m., ma distribuito tra i 514 ed i 2199 metri s.l.m.. È collegata a sud-ovest alla Valle del But passando per Arta Terme e da qui a Tolmezzo, alla Val Pontaiba di Treppo Ligosullo a ovest tramite il Passo Duron, ad est alla Val Pontebbana di Pontebba tramite la Val di Lanza e il Passo del Cason di Lanza, mentre a sud-est oltre la linea di cresta montuosa si estende la Val d'Aupa in territorio del comune di Moggio Udinese, che la dividono dalla zona del Canal del Ferro-Val Canale.
