L'ubicazione attuale della città è su un altopiano stretto dai fiumi Bosso e Burano confluenti al Metauro.
Il comune risulta delimitato verso sud dai monti Catria, Petrano e Nerone e più a nord dal monte Paganuccio che, con il Pietralata, forma le scoscese pareti di calcare massiccio del Passo del Furlo. Dista 51 km da Fano in direzione di Roma.
Dal punto di vista geologico, il territorio è stato studiato sin dall'Ottocento, in particolare da don Mariano Mariotti . Qui è stato rinvenuto l'ammonite Cagliceras , un fossile appartenente ai cefalopodi, proveniente dalle rocce calcaree di origine marina affioranti sui monti del circondario e risalenti al Giurassico inferiore, circa 175 milioni di anni fa.
