Centro principale dell'area delle Colline Metallifere grossetane, è membro dell'Unione di comuni montana Colline Metallifere. Come località turistica maremmana ha ottenuto importanti riconoscimenti per la qualità ambientale.
Il centro di Massa Marittima è situato su una delle propaggini meridionali delle Colline Metallifere, che dominano la sponda sinistra del fiume Pecora, corso d'acqua che ha le proprie sorgenti nella parte nord-orientale del territorio comunale, a sud-ovest della località di Niccioleta.
