È arroccata nella sua parte più antica su un alto poggio. Anticamente il tessuto urbano era diviso in tre parti: il Borgo di Santa Caterina, il Castello di Piticciano e il Piano, oggi semplificati in "Colle alta" e "Colle bassa". Il comune è il più importante centro italiano della produzione di cristallo.
La città è inoltre famosa per aver dato i natali, nel 1240, ad Arnolfo di Cambio, al quale è stata in seguito dedicata la piazza principale.
