Il Passo Giau collega Cortina d'Ampezzo con la valle del fiume Cordevole. Questo passo è più tranquillo rispetto ai più occidentali Pordoi, Falzarego e Sella. Normalmente la strada è aperta tutto l'anno, anche durante l'inverno. Da nord, la strada inizia a Cortina d'Ampezzo, il paese più grande delle Dolomiti. Il passo del Giau è dominato dal grazioso Nuvolau (2574 m). C'è un ristorante dell'hotel e una piccola cappella. Sul versante est si trova la Riserva Naturale Monte Pelmo - Mondeval - Passo Giau. Il Passo è il punto di partenza per la salita del Nuvolau. È un'escursione popolare attraverso la catena montuosa delle Cinque Torri fino al Passo Falzarego. La discesa sul versante sud è più ripida (fino al 10,4%).
