Il suo nome deriverebbe dal greco antico ortyx che significa "quaglia". La sua estensione non supera 1 km² e la sua popolazione ammonta a 4 269 abitanti . È affiancata ad est da alcuni scogli, tra cui uno più largo ma quasi interamente sommerso storicamente conosciuto come l'isola dei cani.
L'isola fu nota nell'antichità con tre denominazioni che si succedettero a seconda del periodo storico.
