La fundación fue el año 734 a. C. , y se inició en la isla de Ortigia . La llamaron Sirako . Existe otra teoría que afirma que el nombre no es de procedencia griega sino fenicia, cuya traducción aproximada sería "roca de las gaviotas".
La ciudad de Siracusa fue consagrada a Diana y tomó el nombre de una laguna o marisma que se llamaba Syraco , en los alrededores.
