Con la denominazione di Castelli Romani si indica un insieme di paesi o cittadine dei Colli Albani posti a breve distanza da Roma, in parte del territorio del Latium Vetus. Come ha ricostruito lo storico Giuseppe Tomassetti , la denominazione risale al XIV secolo quando molti abitanti di Roma, per sfuggire alle difficoltà economiche e politiche derivanti dalla Cattività avignonese, si rifugiarono nei castelli delle famiglie feudali romane dei Savelli , degli Annibaldi , degli Orsini e dei Colonna .
