Il Mercato Vecchio era una zona di Firenze che venne demolita, assieme al vecchio Ghetto, tra il 1885 e il 1895 per la creazione di piazza della Repubblica, nell'ottica del cosiddetto "risanamento" cittadino.
In questo sito si trovava l'antico foro romano di Florentia. La zona aveva un valore altamente simbolico, poiché era il centro geografico della città dove si intersecavano il cardo e il decumano. In corrispondenza di questo incrocio si ergeva la colonna che in seguito fu sostituita dalla colonna dell'Abbondanza, ancora esistente.
