La costruzione interamente in legno, inizialmente sostenuta da sublicae e ritenuta simile a quella del Ponte di Cesare sul Reno, costruito molto più tardi, si trovava probabilmente in prossimità del Foro Boario, a valle dell'isola Tiberina, in un punto poco profondo che era stato anche usato come guado, ma non compare su nessuno dei frammenti della Forma Urbis Severiana. Il ponte, che collegava Roma con la riva destra del Tiberis e la via del sale era stato costruito, secondo la tradizione, nel VII secolo a.C. sotto il dominio del re Anco Marzio. Un'illustrazione di Friedrich Polack del 1896 mostra probabilmente la posizione corretta in cui si trovava il ponte, ma interpreta il ponte solo come un molo anziché come un passaggio sul Tevere.
