Come ente amministrativo è stata sostituita nel 2017 dall'Unione Territoriale Intercomunale Giuliana e poi, nel 2020, dall'ente di decentramento regionale di Trieste. Questi due enti hanno ricalcato i confini ed ereditato alcune strutture della precedente provincia. Rimane invece inalterata come circoscrizione delle amministrazioni statali sul territorio ed è classificata dall'Istituto nazionale di statistica come unità territoriale sovracomunale non amministrativa.
