La fortezza medicea di Volterra fu edificata sul punto più alto del colle su cui sorge la città: dall'esterno appare davvero maestosa e imponente.
La struttura è costituita da due corpi di fabbrica collegati da alte mura difensive: la Rocca Vecchia, detta anche Cassero, fatta costruire nel 1342 dal duca di Atene Gualtieri VI di Brienne, governatore di Firenze e modificata da Lorenzo il Magnifico, e la Rocca Nuova, nota come Il Mastio, fatto costruire dallo stesso Lorenzo il Magnifico tra il 1472 e il 1474.
Oggi l'edificio è adibito a carcere statale di media sicurezza, non accessibile e non visitabile.
