Description

Furono i Fenici i primi a sfruttare questa insenatura naturale (in origine molto più profonda nell'entroterra) nella quale scorrevano i fiumi Kemonia e Papireto . Questi sono ora, a seguito dell'espansione del centro storico, interrati.

Il molo fu costruito tra il 1300 e il 1445 e rimase il porto principale della città fino al XVI secolo, dopodiché iniziò lo sviluppo portuale nelle zone più a nord.

Nel 1939, durante la stesura del piano generale della città, si suggerì brevemente di ampliare il porto in modo che scomparisse.

Attualmente la Cala si presenta come un porto turistico a forma di "U" nel centro storico.
