È stato costituito nel 1944, il partito è stato uno dei tre partiti principali del Lussemburgo, assieme al Partito Popolare Cristiano Sociale ed al Partito Operaio Socialista Lussemburghese .
Il presidente del partito è Claude Meisch, che è succeduto a Lydie Polfer nel 2004. Altri membri principali includono Charles Goerens e Paul Helminger. Il partito è un membro dell'Internazionale Liberale e dell'ALDE. Nel periodo 1999-2004, era il secondo partito del Lussemburgo in quanto a numero di parlamentari, con 15 seggi su 60. In quel periodo faceva parte di un governo di coalizione con il CSV. In seguito all'elezione 2004, il DP ha perso 5 seggi. Il partito inoltre è uscito dalla coalizione col CSV ed è stato sostituito dal LSAP.
