Oggi, il castello di Twickel è una meta popolare per una gita. Il castello stesso non è visitabile, ma i giardini adiacenti possono essere visitati a pagamento. Inoltre, ci sono bellissimi boschi e campi intorno al castello che vengono spesso utilizzati come area per passeggiate. Attraverso i boschi passa anche il sentiero europeo E11, che va da L'Aia verso est, attualmente fino al confine tra Polonia e Lituania. Il percorso è conosciuto in loco anche come Marskramerpad e Handelsweg.
La prima menzione di Twickel risale al 1347. L'ultima proprietaria ha trasferito Twickel a una fondazione, che ancora oggi gestisce le proprietà. Twickel è stata anche regolarmente teatro di negoziati politici e ricevimenti ufficiali.
