Tegenwoordig is kasteel Twickel een populaire bestemming voor een dagje uit. Het kasteel zelf is niet te bezichtigen, maar de bijbehorende tuinen kunnen tegen betaling wel worden bezocht. Daarnaast liggen er rondom het kasteel prachtige bossen en velden die veel gebruikt worden als wandelgebied. Door de bossen loopt ook de Europese wandelroute E11, die loopt van Den Haag naar het oosten, op dit moment tot de grens Polen/Litouwen. De routes is ter plaatse ook bekend als Marskramerpad en Handelsweg.
De oudste vermelding van Twickel is in 1347. De laatste eigenaresse heeft Twickel overgedaan aan een stichting, die nu nog de bezittingen beheert. Twickel was ook regelmatig het toneel voor politieke onderhandelingen en officiÙle ontvangsten.
