Il Museo Drents è situato ad Assen, nel luogo dell'ex monastero Maria in Campis. L'ingresso principale si trova dal 2011 in un ex stalla del Drostenhuis, che è collegata agli altri edifici tramite un tunnel sotterraneo. Nel 1854 fu fondato il Museo Provinciale delle Antichità. Il museo iniziò con un armadio nell'edificio del governo, che faceva parte del monastero Maria in Campis. All'inizio del 1900 trovò spazio nel nuovo edificio dell'Archivio di Stato. Nel 1964 fu acquistato il Palazzo del Ricevitore e dieci anni dopo il museo si trasferì nel palazzo provinciale. Anche il Drostenhuis e la Chiesa dell'Abbazia furono aggiunti al museo. Dal 1996 il museo è chiamato Drents Museum ed è gestito da una fondazione indipendente.
