Nel Peel (derivato dal latino palus = palude) si trovano strati di argilla impenetrabili piuttosto vicini alla superficie, il che rende difficile il deflusso dell'acqua piovana. In molti luoghi si sono formate paludi e localmente si è sviluppata torbiera alta. Quando si scoprì che la torbiera alta essiccata era un buon combustibile, per secoli si ha estratto torba ai margini della zona paludosa. Intorno alla metà del XIX secolo sono iniziati scavi su larga scala per estrarre torba.
Il Parco Nazionale De Groote Peel si trova al confine tra il Noord-Brabant e la Limburgo. De Groote Peel è una delle ultime zone di torbiera alta, per lo più dissodate, che non sono state coltivate. È un paesaggio di torbiere inaccessibili alternate, specchi d'acqua, terreni di lande, pianure e creste sabbiose. L'area paludosa è stata resa accessibile grazie alla costruzione di 'sentieri in legno'.
