Il museo si trova in un certo numero di edifici storici, tra cui l'edificio del Seicento dell'Admiralità di Friesland e Groninga, risalente al periodo dal 1618 al 1645.
Il museo offre un'immagine particolare di 2000 anni di cultura nel Nord-Est della Friesland, in cui Bonifacio, i monaci e i monasteri occupano un posto importante, ma anche antichi oggetti d'uso, arte popolare, pitture e ceramiche frisone.
