È una colonia di torba, nata alla fine del XIX secolo lungo la Middenraai. Grazie a nuove costruzioni su piccola scala, ha acquisito un proprio centro abitato. Una parte del centro del paese è costituita dal parco di bungalow De Breistroeken. Il paese ha una chiesa riformata olandese e una chiesa cristiana riformata. Inoltre, ci sono campi sportivi per il club calcistico SV Nieuw Balinge, numerose associazioni e una scuola primaria pubblica.
