Es handelt sich um eine Torfkolonie, die am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts an der Middenraai entstanden ist. Durch kleinmaßstäbliche Neubauten hat es einen eigenen Dorfkern erhalten. Ein Teil des Dorfkerns wird durch den Bungalowpark De Breistroeken gebildet. Das Dorf hat eine niederländisch-reformierte und eine christlich-reformierte Kirche. Außerdem gibt es Sportplätze für den Fußballverein SV Nieuw Balinge, zahlreiche Vereine und eine öffentliche Grundschule.
