Si trova a sud di Drachten e a est di Beetsterzwaag. È il villaggio più piccolo del comune. Nel 2021 contava circa 80 abitanti. Sotto il villaggio rientra anche la frazione di Heidehuizen. Olterterp appare nel 1315 come Utrathorp. Utrathorp forma insieme a Ureterp, chiamato allora Urathorp, una coppia di nomi che indica la posizione dei due villaggi rispetto al fiume Boorne. L'antico frisone ûtere significa "esterno" o "situato all'esterno" e ûr "su" o "sopra". Olterterp è quindi il villaggio situato a valle. Dopo un periodo in cui le forme Otter- e Olter- sono coesistite, rimane in seguito solo la variante Olterterp.
