Es liegt südlich von Drachten und östlich von Beetsterzwaag. Es ist das kleinste Dorf der Gemeinde. Im Jahr 2021 zählte es etwa 80 Einwohner. Zum Dorf gehört auch die Bauerschaft Heidehuizen. Olterterp wird 1315 als Utrathorp erwähnt. Utrathorp bildet zusammen mit dem damals Urathorp genannten Ureterp ein Namenspaar, das die Lage der beiden Dörfer in Bezug auf den Fluss Boorne angibt. Das altfriesische ûtere bedeutet "äußeres" oder "außen gelegen" und ûr "über" oder "oberen". Olterterp ist also das flussabwärts gelegene Dorf. Nach einer Periode, in der die Formen Otter- und Olter- nebeneinander bestanden haben, bleibt später nur die Variante Olterterp übrig.
