Nel Mauritshuis pende anche il famoso Puttertje di Carel Fabritius 1654. Il dipinto gioca un ruolo centrale nel libro Il Cardellino di Donna Tartt, che è stato adattato nel film omonimo.
Il nome putter è stato inizialmente utilizzato solo per esemplari che venivano tenuti in cattività e avevano imparato a bere, ad esempio, con un thimble attaccato a una catenina, attingendo da un recipiente sottostante. In altre parole: da un distelfink si poteva creare un putter.
Nella Holland del XVII secolo, dove proprio l'arte del putter era popolare, l'uccello poteva simboleggiare ingegno e perseveranza.
