Attacco al ponte ferroviario e al ponte stradale
Il 20 settembre iniziò un nuovo tentativo di raggiungere il ponte stradale, questa volta con un approccio dalle strade più a ovest del ponte. Qui gli americani ebbero più successo e la difesa tedesca fu respinta fino alla collina vicino al Valkhof, che si trova accanto al ponte. Con pesanti bombardamenti e combattimenti casa per casa, intorno alle sei di sera si raggiunse finalmente la rampa per il ponte Waal.
