Le prime menzioni di un castello in questo sito risalgono al Medioevo. Era conosciuto come Merckenburg per molto tempo e ha avuto molti residenti. Jan van Arkel fu il primo a far costruire un castello qui. Non meno di 9 altri castelli seguirono, fondati dalla famiglia van Arkel. Di questi, rimane solo il Castello di Heukelum. L'attuale casa è stata costruita contro la vecchia torre nel 18° secolo e assomiglia molto a una casa a doppio affaccio di Amsterdam. La casa è abitata dall'attuale proprietario e non è aperta al pubblico.
