Il ponte è uno dei pochi resti visibili della storia di Goes come ‘città fortificata’: una città costruita in punti strategici con le cosiddette opere fortificate. Questo era un sistema di mura, porte, bastioni e altro, che aveva lo scopo di proteggere la popolazione della città dagli nemici esterni.
Nel 1663, il ponte di legno presso la Ganzepoort fu sostituito da un ponte di pietra, il famoso Ponte di Pietra.
