El puente es uno de los pocos restos visibles de la historia de Goes como 'ciudad fortificada': una ciudad que se construyó en lugares estratégicos con lo que se denominan obras de fortificación. Este era un sistema de murallas, puertas, bastiones y más, cuyo objetivo era proteger a la población de la ciudad de los enemigos exteriores.
En 1663, el puente de madera junto a la Ganzepoort fue reemplazado por un puente de piedra, el Puente de Piedra.
