Oslo è la capitale e la città più grande della Norvegia. È anche il nome di una provincia e di un municipio; il municipio e la provincia di Oslo si sovrappongono completamente. Oslo ha circa 693.494 abitanti ed è situata nel sud-est del paese, all'inizio dell'Oslofjord.
Secondo le leggende norvegesi, Oslo fu fondata attorno al 1048 dal re Harald Hardråde. Recenti ricerche archeologiche hanno messo in luce cimiteri cristiani antecedenti al 1000, che sono una prova della teoria secondo cui l'urbanizzazione dell'area intorno a Oslo era cominciata prima.
